It’s no mystery that every wedding begins with a proposal, and every so often I’m asked to photograph the big question. In this instance a buddy of mine from New Jersey (who also relocated to Charleston around the same time I did in 2015) asked me to come downtown to The Ordinary where he proposed to his then girlfriend Pamela. With a bit of planning, discrete night-of texting, we dialed-in the timing and I was able to sneak my way upstairs to capture the big question without blowing the suprise. Huge congrats to these two!!
There’s no mistaking that it’s been a HOT summer here in Charleston. So when setting up a engagement session this time of year one of my favorite suggestions is shooting in the early morning just as the suns coming up. This time of day not only yields the coolest temperatures and great light, but DANG - downtown Charleston is essentially a ghost town!
Last month I met up with Lauren & Jarrod for an early morning engagement session. We met up at White Point Gardens, zig zagged our way through the South of Broad side-streets, up to Waterfront Park, and back down to the Battery.
Please enjoy this selection of images from the session!
From their engagement session almost a year ago to the day, until their wedding last month, working with Simone & Jordan was about as good as it gets!
They threw a smash of a wedding at the Charleston Tea Plantation. This was my first time shooting here, and it certainly did not disappoint. There’s plenty of scenery, plenty of shade, trolley transportation around the premises - this is the ideal place for an all outdoor wedding in Charleston.
From the couple:
"James is an incredible photographer…He is calm and composed making photography sessions simple, fun, and lighthearted! Not only did he capture every special moment for us, he was able to capture moments we didn’t even see! He photographed our guests and I was able to relive the entire wedding from beginning to end through our album…James was easy to communicate with, timely in his communication whether it was email or text. He delivered photography by his timeline due date as promised (timely and quick!) and his websites to view the albums were easy to view and instructions were clear! I was very impressed with James photography skills but also his professionalism. I would highly recommend James and his services to anyone in the Charleston area.”
Congrats again Simone & Jordan!

Long time no blog post!
The easy excuse is the off season, but realistically I was just consumed with getting the landscaping in my backyard prepped for summer time. However, now that I’m completing the first galleries of 2019 - it’s go time!
Shelby & Chris got married at the Charleston Yacht Club on a gorgeous March day. I truly don’t believe the weather could have gotten much better not to mention the wedding itself. Water views, live music, dogs, pizza - this one checked a lot of boxes.
Congrats Shelby & Chris, thank you so much for having me be a part of your special day!
Between Christmas and New Years was particularly busy for me this year. Davis and Nathan were the first of 3 weddings in 4 days and it was a great way to kick off the sprint to 2019. This was my second time at the Creek Club at I’on and it’s definitely one the stand-out wedding venues in the Charleston area. It’s a versatile venue in the sense that the rain from the night before moved the ceremony to the indoor area usually reserved for the reception. However it looked so stunning in there, I don’t think anyone would ever suspect it being a “Plan B”. Davis and Nathan were a super fun couple and I had a blast working with them. Congrats!!!
